Outlook 2003 - XP

My Outlook uses the Address book for my mail, which is different from the entries in my Contacts folder.
I need to update the Contacts to be the same as the Address Book, then export the Contacts to populate my Yahoo Contacts.
Where does the Address Book PAB file live?
How do I use it to update my Contacts?
Why are they different?
Am I crazy?

Thanks,
Ron

Are you referring to Windows Address Book versus Outlook's Contacts? And are you saying that there are contacts listed in Windows Address Book that aren't listed in Outlook's Contacts?

• Do you have this Registry key?...

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4

• If not, STOP; If so, is there a DWORD in the right-pane named UseOutlook (NB: no space) and is its value set to 1 (one)?

:hand: If that DWORD is not present, don't create it, and don't alter any other DWORD values!

I don't have that DWORD....

And I don't know if it's the Windows Address Book I'm talking about.

In Outlook, the Address Book icon launches with the upper right dropdown saying " Show Names From The" and has Contacts selected. The other option is Outlook Address Book, but that has no entires in it.
But... the entries I see when Contacts is selected are not the same entries I see when I select Contacts in the Outlook main window (Mail / Calendar / Contacts / Tasks). And these entries are those Outlook will export under the File / Import-Export dropdown.

I want to map the Outlook Address Book icon entries into the Outlook Contacts folder to export them.

See if this KB floats your boat:

Contact information does not appear in the address book in Outlook
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287563

If not, try...

OK, I feel dumb now.
Your KB article was good. What I learned was my Outlook Address Book function was set up fine. It showed the Contacts folder as a subset of the Address Book when I hit the drop down. When I selected the Address Book top level in the dropdown there are no entries shown, just as it should.
The thing that was confusing me was that when I launch the Address Book from the top toolbar icon and deleted an entry in the Contacts, the entry would disappear. But when I selected Contacts from the left sidebar menu, the deleted contact still showed up. But when I opened it, there was no email address in it.
So, bottom line is the Contacts entries I want are all there, but those I deleted are there too, just with no address. I wonder why it does that?
I'll try my export to CSV now and see if they all come across, or just those with addresses. If so, I guess I'll have to delete them from the Contacts sidebar function... ?
I know I've got a couple of old PAB backup files in my addresses archive which I can't remember how I generated them. Perhaps they are WAB files?
Anyway, once again you have really helped me out.
Thanks Bear.
Ron

I have no idea but I'd bet you don't see the same behavior in OL 2007 and OL 2010 (currently in public beta)!

No.

  • WAB = Windows Address Book, used by Outlook Express and accessible via Start | (All) Programs | Accessories | Address Book.

  • PAB = Personal Address Book, an OL-specific file.

It's possible to share Windows Address Book's contacts with OL's Contacts but your computer isn't configured to do so (as determined by your reply to my first post in this thread).

Should you need it:

I've confirmed OL exports those contacts with no addresses.
It was simple to delete them from the contacts folder once I added an email address column to the phone list display format.
The import to Yahoo went smoothly.
Thanks again.
