my sytem is been slow for awhile. run msconfig and noticed at startup "immsiuttssd". googled it and found nothing so i unchecking its box at startup. full scan of antivirus found some trojan and eliminated. however, i can't log in as admin anymore, i got blue screen saying "problem detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer ..." log in not as admin and got in, but it is weird because i log off and log back in as admin and system lets me in but now i don't have internet access under admin. run precedures listed on this forum and results are :

Nothing jumping out as malicious in your posts, other than one item that suggests an unwanted proxy server is in place. There are a couple things worthy of note (i.e. Malwarebytes', uTorrent, outdated Java and Adobe) but we can address those later.

For now, re-enable items you've disabled via msconfig and re-run/re-post the preliminary steps you've done. This will provide me with the needed forensic evidence to combat the malware that troubles your system.

Also let me know if after re-enabling the msconfig items your system now works with an administrator profile.

Next, let me know what specific file (and path) was identified as a virus and which application (e.g. McAfee, Malwarebytes') identified it.

Was an antivirus application installed prior to the problems you now experience?

Finally, if you have a log from running Malwarebytes', please post it.

Post Back
Please post back with the following:

    1. Confirmation that you re-enabled msconfig items;
    2. After re-enabling msconfig items, can you now run your system normally with an administrator account?
    3. New set of preliminary instruction logs;
    4. Which file (and path) and application identified a virus?
    5. Was an antivirus application installed prior to the problems you now experience?
    6. Malwarebytes' log from your earlier run. Do not run it again.

Please number your answers to match my questions.

Good Luck :!:

<~Moderator kibbitz>

When (approx. date) did you install AT&T McAfee Security Center freebie from your ISP and was the computer fully-patched at Windows Update at the time?

What anti-virus application was installed before you installed AT&T McAfee Security Center, was your subscription still current, and did you uninstall it before you installed McAfee Security Center?

Has another McAfee application or a Norton application ever been installed on the computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Thanks for the response, sorry for the delay.

1. msconfig items are anabled.
2. no, I have to log-in using another account then I log-off and switch user then I can run my system as admin. however, I can log-in as admin in safe mode.
3. Run OTL but only one set of logs were produced. OTL.txt was created but Extras.txt was not produced. Checkup.txt was created fine. Here they are :

Thanks for the information. Let's proceed. :)

Starting instructions
:hand: The following instructions are only for this Forum member and machine. If you use these instructions on another machine, you risk seriously damaging the system and doing so will make clean up much more difficult and complicated. If you think you have a similar problem, please begin your own, new thread. I do not offer free private support.

A few things before we begin:
    1. Please follow my instructions exactly as specified and in the order given.
    2. Please do not make any software additions/subtractions unless I ask you to until we're finished. It helps me clearly understand what's happening with your system.
    3. It's best to print these instructions for reference as you work through the steps.
    4. If you get stuck on a step, keep going and do as much as you can. It's best to perform this in one session.

Do Not Use The Attachment Feature
Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.

P2P Concern
ImageYour logs showed some peer-to-peer filesharing apps. I do not recommend their use since such filesharing/downloading from unknown sources is one of the leading causes of transmission of malware.

Read more here:
File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer and Risks of File-Sharing Technology.

My preference is that you un-install uTorrent and any other P-2-P that this pc has. Should you choose to keep it I ask that you not use the application until I've finished cleaning your system.

Preliminary Setup
First, do this ==> show all files:
Windows XP
    -Click Start.
    -Open My Computer.
    -Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    -Select the View Tab.
    -Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    -Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    -Click Yes to confirm..

Check your LAN settings
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options."
3. Click "Connections," and then click "LAN Settings."
4. Make sure the check boxes for "Automatically detect settings" and "Use automatic configuration script" are not selected.
5. Apply changes & OK

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications
Usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
For directions on how, see How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs
:!: Do NOT turn off the firewall :!:

  • Save the log. Post a copy of that log in your next reply.

Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process.
If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTL\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
If you have an earlier version, you must uninstall it via Add or Remove Programs before performing the following.

:!: You need to uninstall your earlier version :!:

Please download by clicking here:
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
  • Re-name the downloaded file Nailmalware
  • Once re-named, close all programs and Windows on your computer (including this one.)
  • Double-click on the icon on your desktop named Nailmalware.exe. This will start the installation of MBAM onto your computer.
  • When the installation begins, keep following the prompts in order to continue with the installation process. Do not make any changes to default settings and when the program has finished installing, make sure you leave both the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware checked. Then click on the Finish button.
  • MBAM will now automatically start and you will see a message stating that you should update the program before performing a scan. As MBAM will automatically update itself after the install, you can press the OK button to close that box and you will now be at the main program.
  • On the Scanner tab, make sure the the Perform full scan option is selected and then click on the Scan button to start scanning your computer.
  • MBAM will now start scanning your computer for malware. This process can take quite a while, so we suggest you go and do something else and periodically check on the status of the scan.
  • When the scan is finished a message box will appear that it has completed scanning successfully. Click OK. Now click Show Results.
  • :!: Make sure all entries have a Checkmark at their far left. If you do not, the program will have done nothing..
  • Click on the Remove Selected button to remove all the listed malware. MBAM will now delete all of the files and registry keys and add them to the programs' quarantine.
  • When MBAM has finished removing the malware, it will open the scan log and display it in Notepad. Review the log as desired, and then do a File, Save and then close the Notepad window. Remember where you saved the log file, as we will want to see it later. If MBAM suggests a reboot is necessary, be sure to do so. Otherwise there can be active infectors still on your system that would only be removed finally with the reboot sequence.

ComboFix
If you have an earlier version, delete it before performing the following.

Download ComboFix from any of the links below. You must rename it to Combo-Fix before saving it. Save it to your Desktop.

If you are using Firefox, go to Tools > Options > Main and select 'Always ask me where to save files' and click OK.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures. Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image Click on Yes to continue scanning for malware.

Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

    1. Contents of C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
    2. Contents of C:\Combofix.txt;
    3. OTL log;
    4. Hijackthis log;
    5. System status...how are things now???

Please number your answers to match my questions.

Good Luck :!:

Good morning. I followed the procedures listed but came across an issue and computer had a failure. Deleted P2P, followed preliminary setup (show hidden files, etc) ....created OTL and MBAM files ... Downloaded ComboFix, renamed and saved to desktop, doubled click and followed prompts and combofix downloaded Microsoft Recovery Console successfully, click yes on the message box and after a few minutes my computer screen turned blue and had the following message :
" a problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA ..."
then at the bottom of this page had the following information :
" TECHNICAL INFORMATION
*** STOP: 0x00000050 (0xFFFFFFFB, 0x00000000, 0x8054B5B2, 0x00000000) "
I waited about 15-20 minutes thinking it is part of the combofix run but apparently it wasn't. I have to say thouh, that as I'm doubleclicking combofix to start up the process, my antivirus went thru automatic update. also as combofix was running, I had a window pop-up from antivirus saying that registry for some files has been changed and I allowed it to proceed. Not sure what to do next, please advise. Thanks.

Best thing to do at the moment is reboot the system, delete the copy of Combo-Fix you have, download a new copy and repeat my instructions for this application making sure that your AntiVirus application is completely disabled (read here for disabling your AV => http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ ... pic=114351 ).

Should that still not work, boot to safe mode and run Combo-Fix. If still no joy, skip Combo-Fix and continue with the balance of my instructions.

Good Luck :!:

Ok, deleted combofix and installed again, ran ComboFix and had the same issue about blue screen. rebooted, deleted it again; rebooted once more, this time in safe mode, installed combofix and ran it again and this time it went through fine. finished up the rest of the instructions without any problems now.

Let's do a few things here.

Keep in mind that until I tell you that your system is free of malware, it is not :!: We'll get there and are getting there. :wink:

Pay close attention to the details in the instruction set (e.g. disabling your AV when running ESET) I provide. Details matter :!:

Run ComboFix
Let's re-run ComboFix as follows:

  • :!: Important: Have no other programs running. Your Task Bar should be clear of any program entries including your Browser.
  • :!: Disable your Antivirus software. If it has Script Blocking features, please disable these as well.
  • A window may open with a series of Disclaimers. Accept the Disclaimers to start the fix. When the scan completes Notepad will open with with your results log open. Do a File, Exit and answer 'Yes' to save changes.

Using your mouse, Highlight and then Right-click | Copy the entire contents of the Code box below, including blank lines:
Code:
Killall::

Driver::
NWLNKFLTT

Open a new Notepad session (Do not use a Word Processor or WordPad). Click "Format" and be certain that Word Wrap is not enabled. Right-click | Paste the Code box contents from above into Notepad. Click File, Save as..., and set the location to your Desktop, and enter (including quotation marks) as the filename: "CFscript.txt" .

Using your mouse, drag the new file CFscript.txt and drop it on the ComboFix.exe icon as shown:

Image

A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once. Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

A file will be created at => C:\Combofix.txt. I'll need to see that in your reply.

Do not run ComboFix more than once :!:

Re-activate your protection programs at this time :!:

Reboot now, please :!:

ESET Online Scanner
Click => here to run an online scannner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Post Back
Please post back with the following:

    1. New Combo-Fix report;
    2. Results from ESET online scan;
    3. How is your system running now???

Note that I'll need to help you clean up after the applications I've had you used once I'm sure that all malware has been removed.

Good Luck :!:

That's not good. :(

This error has been known to occur when a memory stick is in a card reader and the computer is attempting to boot from it. If you have any type of card reader or flash reader make sure that no memory stick is inside the computer. Additionally disconnect all USB drives, cameras, ipods, iphones, etc. from the computer.

If you shut the system down using the power button and re-start it, does the problem persist?

Additionally, what type of Windows XP CD do you have?

    1. Windows XP Installation disc?
    2. System recovery disc, which is usually OEM (e.g. Dell, Sony, HP) supplied by the manufacturer to restore the system to its original state?

Finally, are you able to boot to safe mode?

Let me know, please.

Good Luck :!:

I restarted my system and made sure nothing is attached to it, such as usb, etc but not able to get rid of issue. Tried to reboot in safe mode but got the same error message. I have xp recovery disk and looks like I will need to reinstall using disk. I was wondering, Is there a way to recover system without loosing any of my data such as pics, or other files I have stored in "my documents" ? Please advise.

Let's see if we can fix your master boot record before we do anything else. We'll worry about backing things up should we not be able to get the machine to properly boot. This can be done so don't panic. :wink:

Fix the MBR
Reboot your machine and when the Boot Menu flashes up - select "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console"
(you need to be very fast with the arrow key as you only have a couple of seconds before it defaults to the windows XP bootup)

Image

Image

When you get to the above screen, take note of the number that references your operating system.
If it's '1' like the picture above, type 1 and press Enter

Image

Next type FIXMBR

Image

If it ask if you're sure you want to write a new MBR, answer 'Y'

Then type EXIT to reboot the machine.

Check for Bootkit
Should you now be able to boot the machine, I'd like for you to check for a bootkit.

Download Bootkit remover to your desktop from here => http://www.esagelab.com/files/bootkit_remover.rar

This is a rar file if you do not have a program to open it then download and install Peazip from here => http://www.filehippo.com/download_peazip/

  • Extract Remover.exe to your desktop;
  • Double click Remover.exe to run it;
  • It will show a Black screen with some data on it;
  • Right click on the screen and select > Select All > Press Control+C ;
  • Open a notepad and press Control+V ;
  • Post the resultant log here please.

Post Back
Please post back with the following:

    1. Are you now able to boot the machine?
    2. Result from bootkit remover.
    3. How is the system running now???

Good Luck :!:

The only way to get to the recovery console was using the XP recovery CD. Followed your procedures, fixmbr, exit .... but my system reboots to the same message about "NTLDR ..." not sure waht to do next, please advise.

Lets check a couple more things.

Restore NTLDR and Ntdetect.com
Boot to the recovery console using your CD.

When you reach the command line, type in the following, in turn, (be sure to include spaces) then hit your enter key:

    copy d:\i386\ntldr c:\
    copy d:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

Note: In the command listed above, d represents the drive letter assigned to the optical drive that your CD in, this is most often the case but your system could be different. Also, c:\ represents the root folder of the partition that Windows XP is currently installed on, this is most often the case but your system could be different.

If you're prompted to overwrite either of the two files, press Y.

Take out the CD, type exit and then press Enter to restart your PC.

If your system now boots, stop here.

Fix boot.ini
1. Boot to the recovery console using your CD.

2. When you reach the command line, type the following command (making sure you have the space between the g and /) :

    bootcfg /rebuild

and then press Enter.

Note: The bootcfg utility will scan your hard drives for any Windows XP installations and then display the results. Follow the remaining steps to add your Windows XP installation to the boot.ini file.

3. The first prompt asks Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All).

4. Type Y in response to this question and press Enter.

5. The next prompt asks you to Enter Load Identifier.
    This is the name of the operating system. For example, type Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition and press Enter.

6. The final prompt asks you to Enter OS Load options. Type:

    /Fastdetect

and press Enter.

7. Take out the CD, type exit and then press Enter to restart your PC.

Post back with results.

Good Luck :!:
