Description:
A restoration to "Software Distribution Service 3.0" restore point failed. No changes have been made to the system.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Can anyone help with this please? Above is log from eventvwr.msc.

System is XP home edition - version 2002 with service pack 3. I am running Zone alarm, which I believe can interfere with it...

Is this a sudden, new problem?

Which update(s) did you install (e.g., WinXP SP3; KB977165) and what problem(s) do you think may have been caused by having installed the update(s)?

:hand: Never, EVER use System Restore to "undo" an update, Service Pack, or IE upgrade! Instead, uninstall the update, Service Pack, or IE upgrade & reboot. If that doesn't correct the problem, then try System Restore.

Since you reference ZoneAlarm, have you posted about the problem in the appropriate ZA forum yet? => http://forum.zonelabs.org/

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

The problem has been there for a while, but I have not had cause to use system restore, so I don't really know which update caused the problem. I am using Avast free anti-virus and use A squared occasionally for malware scans. Recently I tried Lavasoft "Ad-aware" but have uninstalled it as it seemed to slow the system down, especially booting up. I have not yet posted anything in the Zone alarm forum. Also have not yet tried to run system restore in safe mode, which I have heard suggested.

What problem? You only mentioned a "system restore failure."

Then why did you select that Restore Point (which points to a Restore Point created when one or more updates were about to be installed)?

As you posted here, one assumed you'd already visited this page: http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html

If you suspect you're seeing the effects of a hijackware infection, start here: http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=4075

After taking care of all requested Preliminaries in the above thread, please begin a new thread in Malware Removal forum and post your three (3) logs.

The "problem" I refer to is the fact that system restore will not work. It appears to run - go through the various steps, and reboot the system. But when it reloads, there is the error of no changes made, as detailed in the log.

I used this restore point only because it was the most recent.

I have read this article, but do not specifically suspect malware infection, unless someone can advise differently.

Thanks for the help so far.

Good luck then. Let us know what the experts in ZA forum might have to say about this.
