Hello

After some recent problems with an update to Mcafee, i used system restore. (this was actually the third time i had used system restore in the past 2 days. the previous two times, it worked like a charm). this last time though it loaded the desktop picture (without the programs/icons appearing) fine, but then seemed to hang and never loaded the restore confirmation screen (and thus, not the icons). There were never any error messages. After a half an hour of it just being a blank destop I restarted the computer. When it restarted it loaded everything ok at the correct restore point, but now certain programs wont work, including system restore. When i start the system restore program, it simply pulls up a plain, solid grey screen with no text whatsoever. Also the search function in windows explorer doesn't work (the little dog appears, but none of the search boxes appear above him). Web pages work for the most part, but pull down menus on them no longer work (the options will lower, but when selected, they don't go anywhere).

I guess it is obvious that something was corrupted, but i am a complete computer idiot, so i am a bit perplexed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much,
Brian Davis

Hi,
I'm sorry, but i ended up figuring out my own problem. i had unistalled Mcafee prior to the last restore, but my restore point that i chose still showed that it was installed, in spite of it not being there. When i realised this, i tried rerunning the "MCPR" program that cleans up all traces of Mcafee, and after rebooting, eveything seems to be back to normal. the system restore program looks fine as do the other problems i was having.

Sorry again.
Brian Davis

Had you McAfee subscription expired or...?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed now and is your subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a Norton application ever been installed on the computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Why isn't WinXP SP3 installed yet?

Support for WinXP (x86) SP2 ends on 13 July 2010. After that date, computers running WinXP (x86) SP2 "will no longer receive software updates from Windows Update" unless and until SP3 is installed. Extended Support for Windows XP SP3 will continue through 08 April 2014.

    • What does it mean if my version of Windows is no longer supported?
