Hello. I bought a Toshiba USB External Hard Drive (HDDR320E04XW) and attached it to a USB port. Then I formatted the drive to ntfs. This drive had(has) backup software which I did not want, hence the format. However, in properties I see 98mb used and 297GB unused. So, I am unsure if the software is still on the drive. I should have uninstalled the software first, but didn't. I don't know if there is anything that can be done about that.

The real problem comes when I try to "Safely Remove Hardware". In a matter of seconds, I get a BSOD. I attached external a number of times and each time, upon trying to safely remove, I get the same BSOD.

I installed Blue Screen Viewer and find I have a ntoskrnl.exe problem that I do not know how to handle. Thanks for any help on this. Dump 1 thru 6 are the same.

I ran a check disk routine on the internal drive WD3200BEVS-26VATO hoping that it would repair ntoskrnl.exe (and not sure if it didn't). Check disk replaced 3 bad clusters and moved 5 clusters to a bad cluster file. So, other questions. Do I have a bad diskdrive or one that is going bad? Did the ntoskrnl.exe get fixed? Should I format the external once more at this point or did I mess it up. Any advice? Check Disk Log follows:

Use the warranty and replace the disk. It's not working properly.

That confirms my suspicions. Thank you.

Sorry for the late post.

I called Toshiba Support for a RMA and they told me that I had to restore to original factory
settings and run another check disk before they would authorize a RMA or repair. So, I did that
and the disk came up clean. I wonder how the disk could contain errors and then come up clean.

So, thinking that I would get nowhere with the Support people, I wiped the hard drive of all
partitions and clean installed Windows 7 Home Premium x64. Windows 7 has been running very
good for 7-8 days. I have used the external drive several times under Windows 7, safely removing
each time, without a BSOD.

I am still concerned about the internal disk drive, and I will keep an eye out for any problems.

Thanks for reading this and for your help.

Unusual that. Perhaps you can contact Toshiba and ask. I can't see anything you did as "curing" disk problems. Like you I'd keep a cautious eye on that sucker.
