I have a windows xp with sp3 installed.
I havent had this problem before and here is what happened. My computer kept telling me to do some automatic updates and saying that it will be download them in 14 minutes or so ( countdown ). Since I was busy using the pc I chose the "restart later" option. Then I left my pc and went to do something else, so I assume that the message to get the updates, and that my pc will restart, appeared again. I decided to use my computer again and I noticed that just before I was going to move the mouse, the standby screen was starting to appear. Then when I moved the mouse so the the pc will resume normally from stand by, the computer rebooted. Im not sure it the system was about to stand by or to normally reboot after getting the updates ( meaning it never went on standby, and me moving the mouse never affected anything ).
Then I got a message telling me that the system closed unexpectedly and it gave me options into how to boot it again properly. I tried the "last known configuration", "windows normally", and all the 3 of the safe modes, and nothing happened ... it kept rebooting. Then I chose the option to disable automatic rebooting after system failure, and tried to get into windows. A blue screen popped up telling me that if I see a "stop message" with a driver name, that I should disable it. Well this is what appeared:
stop: 0x0000007e (0x80000003 0x805c49b8 0xf89c02b4 0xf89bffb0)
No driver name though.
I checked this link of the microsoft site:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330182
It gives you possible solutions to the problem. The thing is that I cant even get into the system using safe mode, and thats because when I choose the "disable automatic reboot after system failure I go directly to 2 options: to start windows, or recovery console. The safe mode option is in the same screen list as the "disable reboot" one, so I either choose safe mode ( which then will do nothing since the system will reboot in the splash screen ), or "disable reboot" ( where then there is no safe mode option available ).
What can I do about this?

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I can only access the recovery console via the DOS system. When I tried to use that option at first, I had the regular point and click and interface, but now I only have the DOS, and Im totally unfamiliar with the latter.

I wanted to do a second edit to my first post, but I couldnt because it said my post had been "locked".

This is what I have done so far without any luck:
Tried to use recovery console within the system by using DOS commands. The program loads and then tells me to choose which drive I want to log into. The 3 drives are :
1. D: i386
2. D: minnt
3. c: windows
I assume I have to choose windows so I type 3 and hit enter. It then asks me for a password. I just hit enter and then comes the part where I have to input dos commands.
I have tried using c:windows/fixboot c .... also fixmbr c. Some people online say that this commands ussually fixes most of the booting problems. Nothing happened. =/

EDIT: I know that another solution would be to use a windows xp installation cd and set my pc so it will boot from it instead from the computer. When I bought my pc it didnt come with those cds, but I have the recovery console and all the programs I need in a D drive if I want to do a system recovery and get my pc to its factory default settings. I know how to do that, but only if Im using the point and click interface, not the DOS one.
I dont think I need the installation cd, because I already have it inside my computer. The problem is how to access it and how to repair windows ( by pressing "R" or something ).
Sorry if Im making double posts or too much editing, but I just want to give you guys as much information as I can in order to get a better help for this matter.

If you own a Dell, then it would appear you're probably not alone...

The issue appears to not be isolated to Dell systems and the solution may be in removing the update itself.

Your solution may be found in this thread => http://www.techsupportforum.com/microso ... ork-2.html where I'll quote the steps taken.

It appears that you need to remove this via the recovery console:
mrackbar wrote:
I had to uninstall this from the recovery console after.

boot off your windows xp cd
press r for recovery console
select your windows install (1 in my case)
enter your administrator password

when at the c:\windows prompt enter:
cd $ntuninstallkb971486$
cd spuninst
batch spuninst.txt

it will run some commands

exit

reboot
Good Luck :!:

I uninstalled the update and it worked!
Now what will be the steps to follow in order to ensure this wont happen again?
Should I use system restore and get my computer back as it was before this problem?
How can I prevent my system for trying to install this update again?
Thx.

Good, I'm glad that worked.

No, do not use system restore at this point. For now, I'd hide the update so that you no longer have it offered to you.

Hiding Windows Updates XP
Start by going to => Microsoft Update and after it opens, hit the Custom button.

A list of updates will be given. If KB971486 is included, uncheck the box to the left of it, then check the "Don't show this update again" box below the update. Then click "Review and show updates" and it will be hidden and not offered.

I recommend getting no charge support as outlined by Microsoft here => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971486 as they should be able to pinpoint the exact problem and it will make them more aware of the flaws in their update. Remember that hiding the update simply prevents the failure however it also prevents your system from having the needed security patch.

Post back with results after performing the above as well as system status ... how is it running :?:

Good Luck :!:

<EDIT>
:hand: Also see
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blogs/mowgreen/index.php?showentry=1579
</EDIT>

:hand: I would NOT recommend hiding any critical security update! :hand:

You will want to print the instructions below or copy/paste into Notepad for offline reference
============================================================

1a. Open Add/Remove Programs & make sure the Show Updates box is checked at the top.

1b. If Security Update for Windows XP (KB971486) is listed, Uninstall it and reboot your computer.

2. Select the appropriate link below and SAVE the download to your C: drive (assuming Windows is installed on your C: drive), do not RUN it:

3. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon the task bar).

4. Click Start | Run | (type or copy/paste) C:\WindowsXP-KB971486-x86-ENU.exe /o | [OK]

5. Reboot, even if not prompted to do so.

Assuming all is well, you can then delete the file you saved in Step #2 above (i.e., C:\WindowsXP-KB971486-x86-ENU.exe <=this file)

In this case, I would as well as using the MS Free Support that I referenced. I prefer having MS work users through issues such as this and should they not be able to work things out alternative measures are appropriate.

Go ahead and try Robear's directions if you'd like, they may well work but won't provide any information to MS relative to the problems with their update.

Good Luck :!:

Sorry for not replying earlier, but I just tried to go on with the saying: If it is working, do not fix it.

I already sent the inquiry to windows support via the link KB posted, and it says I should be getting a reply in 1 business day.
Now I have a question. After sending the information, I got a message saying that I needed to let windows support team get information from my computer by downloading and enabling some tools. I opted to do so, but it seems I'm stuck in the 50% progress of downloading ( in the "tool for collecting system information" ). It's been like this for almost 20 minutes now ... is this normal? Should I have opted not to share my pc's info?

I would rather go with the help that you can get from calling:

    1-866-PCSAFETY

See what they have to say and make sure you have all the details of what you've done to try to get the update to work, system information (including Operating System, Service Pack level, AV/AS applications, system brand and model etc etc) ready to answer their questions.

Be prepared before you call.

Good Luck :!:

I got a reply yesterday saying this:
"From the similar feedback, we find the problem is caused because the recent .NET Framework 1.1 update is incompatible with hardware drivers. The issue mostly occurs on some OEM machines."
Then they wanted me to uninstall a KB953297 update. I replied saying that I do not have that update installed, and that I already solved the problem by uninstalling KB971486 update ( I stated this in the first email I sent them ).
I'm still awaiting a response.
Do you think it will be better if I follow Robert instructions ( to download the file separately and install it in a different way )?

Stick with MS Support on this one for now, please, but keep us posted.

PS: If there's an SRX number assigned to your support incident, may as I ask you to ping me via Private Message and copy/paste the number into your message? I might be able to expedite things for you. (Please do NOT post the SRX number in a reply to this thread.)

Just click on the Image icon on the left immediately below this reply frame. Thanks!
