When typing a new email, or replying to an email, in html format there is a significant delay from when the letters are typed to when they appear on the screen. This only happens in the body of the email and not in the subject line or address fields. If we type quickly without stopping we can go for many words and lines without anything appearing until the typing stops - then it all appears at once.

We've searched around other forums and Microsoft newsgroups and have seen others report this same issue. So far I haven't been able to find a solution and am wondering if anyone who frequents this forum might have an idea.

The problem seems to be related to Internet Explorer 7. Our problems started after IE 7 was installed. We have 3 computers and have the same issue on each so it's not a machine specific problem. We had a separate issue with one of our computers that we thought might be malware related. With the help of the good folks at this forum we were able to scrub our system clean (there was no malware found except some tracking cookies) so I'm confident it's not a malware issue, either.

We can temporarily fix this problem by going into Tools-Options and changing virtually any setting and exiting. The problem will disappear until Outlook is closed and restarted. Then the problem is back. We've tried changing settings in Spybot (immunization on/off, SDHelper on/off) but this makes no difference.

If you choose Word as your email editor everything works fine.

For now, we're using text format for email creation which works just fine. It can be a bit problematic when replying to an html format email if it needs to stay in that format.

Any thoughts?

Our 3 systems that experience this problem each have a different version of Windows XP: XP Home, MCE 2005, and XP Professional. They all have Norton Internet Security 2007 and Spybot 1.4 running.

Be sure that your antivirus is set to NOT check email - disable every single email-related feature in AV (you don't need them!).

Does this fix it?

Why would you do that? 8O

You don't need to check your email separately. Your virus scanner already catches any such viruses by (a) identifying them during a scan and, more importantly, (b) catching them when they become active, i.e., if you open/launch an email or attachment that has a virus.

Having it filter the email itself (during receipt, for example) doesn't make you any more safe. What it does do is slow email delivery and hang email programs.

Every responsible and honest AV manufacturer - with Symantec leading the pack years ago - will tell you that you don't need email filtering. The only reason it's there is for competition for your business: Consumers think they need it and, if a program doesn't have this, then most people are less likely to buy it when they are doing comparison shopping.

HTML emails are scanned more aggressively than text emails and this is one in real-time if you have AV scanning of your email. It wouldn't happen using Word because it isn't being treated as an email but as a Word file, and this is handled differently. So, my educated guess of what could be wrong is that your AV filtering of email is the culprit.

I'm suggesting you disable it and see if it solves your problem.

Nope. Turned it off and same problem.

Dang. Too bad.

OK, new start: Are you running the prophylactic (real time) features of SpyBot? If so, turn it off. (We don't recommend the real-time monitoring of SpyBot or Ad-Aware - just using them as scanners.) That's been known to interfere.

I've started searching the web looking for clues. When the HTML email problem appears in Outlook with IE7, SpyBot is mentioned in most of the items I've found. So it's worth checking.

You didn't mention what version of Outlook you are running.

I'll look further, see if I can find anything more, while you try the above.

PS - There are frequent references to the problem being temporarily fixed by either using the Reset feature or clearing caches (which is part of what Reset does). I'm still thinking this is a factor. You might consider setting IE to clear caches each time it exits.

Addiionally, you might do a HijackThis log (in this thread) so that we can get a representative look at what is running on these machines.

Tried that. No difference. Turning the immunization off actually caused Outlook 2003 to crash.

I've been following a thread at Spybot forums as I noticed the same thing. There are also lots of posts at the Microsoft newsgroups - but no solutions that I could see. The gist of the Spybot thread is that it is not a Spybot issue but rather a Microsoft issue. People are reporting there that they have the same problem without Spybot installed.

People there are also reporting this problem just now appearing this week after this week's Windows updates. Interesting how it is appearing at different times for different people.

I decided to go one step further. I uninstalled Spybot, rebooted, and ... same problem.

Definitely not Spybot.

Okay, I still do not know how to permanently apply a fix for this, but I DEFINITELY know why your typing/e-mail create/e-mail open is so slow. Of course, the amount of slowdown will vary per-machine, but that is irrelevant.

I decided to run a process viewer on my machine, and I was amazed to discover that with Immunization enabled, Outlook was literally scanning each and every single blocked domain that Spybot had added to the Security Zones every time I opened an e-mail or even typed a letter. Yes, each time I pressed "A" on my keyboard, my CPU was running through all 13,000+ entries in the registry's Zonemaps. In fact, anything that had to do with HTML text editing was causing this. Opening a HTML-formatted e-mail, typing HTML-formatted text, or even highlighting said text would all result in my CPU having to run a marathon. The more you type, the more gets added to the CPU's work queue, and you can see where the progressive slowdown comes from. With Immunization turned off (i.e. all bad domains removed from the Zonemaps section of my registry), not only does Outlook work flawlessly, but what's most peculiar is that unlike before it doesn't even try to scan the Zonemaps.

So, long story short:
Immunization turned on = CPU makes 13,000+ queries to your registry.
Immunization turned off = CPU takes a breather and doesn't even check.
cf. "Ronald Reagan", http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=11047

You mis-stated the case made for Immunization turned off in the Spybot Forum. In the Spybot forum immunization turned off means: "Immunization turned off (i.e. all bad domains removed from the Zonemaps section of my registry), ..."

The issue is the 13,000 restricted sites entries made to the registry by Spybot immnization. This use of the restricted sites zone was not intended by Microsoft and they have previously made this clear in questions and discussions about IE-Spyad and Spyware Blaster (in part) that work in a similar fashion using restricted sites.

The "fix" is to remove those restricted site entries under IE7. Under IE7 you can use "RIES", found at the bottom of Internet Options, Advanced tab. A RIES reset will clear the restricted zone site entries. (You can also download and use DelDomain.inf found here: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/restricted.htm )

While I am sympathetic to your issue, I honestly do not think you are going to see a hotfix from Microsoft for this isssue. Their implicit policy stance in the past has been that you are misusing the restricted sites feature. There is no question IE7 changed the handling of restricted sites. And your slow mail entry is obviously one consequence of having an list of sites in excess of 10,000 registry entries that need to be checked. I just would be shocked if you were able to convince Microsoft to re-architect this feature in IE7.

I'm in over my head now but why wasn't the problem fixed when I uninstalled Spybot completely? If immunization is the problem why didn't the problem disappear when Spybot was removed?

There's something I'm not getting here.

I decided to go one step further. I uninstalled Spybot, rebooted, and ... same problem.

Definitely not Spybot.

Thanks for this.

Now that you've removed it, do another Reset in IE - to clear the residuals likely left behind by SpyBot - and then (with SpyBot no longer on the system to reinstate these) see if the problem comes back. (Uninstalling SpyBot didn't necessarily undo changes that SpyBot had already made to your Registry.)

Do a RIES as discussed earlier. Tools, Internet Options, Advanced tab. At the bottom click to "Reset Internet Explorer settings" and then reboot.
