IE8 Final (RTW) was released today! :slap:

Installing/Uninstalling IE8:

:!: If you're having problems with IE6 or IE7, upgrading to IE8 is not likely to correct things! If anything, doing so will only make resolving the problems much more difficult.

My personal recommendations include:

:hand: Install IE8 manually, not via Windows Update/Automatic Updates!!
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/worldwide-sites.aspx

NB WinXP users: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it. When you're prepared to install IE8, double-click on the saved file.

NB Vista users: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it. When you're prepared to install IE8, right-click on the saved file and select Run as Administator.

=> Uninstall all third-party toolbars (e.g., Google; Yahoo; Windows Live) and third-party Windows Themes before installing IE8.

=> Close all open applications (i.e., anything with a taskbar icon) before installing or uninstalling IE8.

:hand: I would strongly recommend disabling your anti-virus application and any anti-spyware application's "system protections" (other than Defender) before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. If you're running a third-party firewall, I would recommend disabling it and then enabling the Windows Firewall before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade.

=> Do NOT use System Restore to remove/uninstall IE8; instead, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700. Should problems persist after uninstalling, then try System Resetore. NB: Norton users will need to see http://bertk.mvps.org/html/symantecdoc1.html.

NB WinXP users: Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8, then go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Select CUSTOM and scan | Install any Critical Security Updates offered. If a Root Certificates update is listed in the Optional Software Updates category on the left, install it to take full advantage of IE's enhanced security.

NB Vista users: Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8, then check-in at Windows Update and install any critical security updates offered.

How to uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8 (in case you need it)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

WinXP users: If you install IE8 and then install WinXP SP3, you will not be able to uninstall IE8 without first uninstalling SP3!

Consumer Support:

No-charge support for Internet Explorer 8 installation, set-up and usage (only) is available via telephone (based on your locale) and has been extended until 02 July 2010. Customers must be running Windows XP or Windows Vista in a non-domain environment. Advanced issues which do not qualify for no-charge support include problems that are associated with software and hardware development, network connectivity, server-based technologies, and business-critical systems.

IE8 Day #2 follow-up:

If you have SpywareBlaster installed & all Protections enabled and/or you have Spybot installed & fully Immunized and/or you're running IESpyAd ZonedOut, you may find IE8 falling all over itself & CPU spiking to 100% due to the number of sites these "protections" add to Restricted Sites zone.

Instead of adding thousands of domains to Restricted Sites zone, you will need to depend on IE8's SmartScreen Filter and additional enhanced security now.

:hand: Please proceed with extreme caution here!

Internet Explorer 8 takes longer than expected to start:

Internet Explorer 8 may stop responding or crash when a certain version of AVG Safe Search is installed:

Posting as an FYI...

Internet Explorer 8 Delivery through Automatic Updates
Quote:
Automatic Updates will notify all such users (including those with Automatic Updates configured to automatically download and install updates) when Internet Explorer 8 has been downloaded and is ready to install. The notification and installation process will not start unless and until a user who is a local administrator logs on to the machine. Users who are not local administrators will not be prompted to install the update and will thus continue using Internet Explorer 6 or Internet Explorer 7.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/updatemanagement/dd365125.aspx

Translation: IE8 will not install without your approval when it's released to Windows Update later this year.

:hand: WinXP users who have Automatic Updates set to Notify Only option and Vista users who have Automatic Updates set to Let Me Choose option do not need to use the IE8 Blocker Toolkit to avoid downloading/installing IE8.
