There have been a number of reports of Windows Explorer crashing when a sub-folder is right clicked. One cause has been identified as being associated with a program called Webroot Spy Sweeper. The solution appears to be to either uninstall it, or disable the "add to context menu" selection in the Options menu.

This is always the problem with things like Service Packs. Testing can never trace down the weird combinations of poorly written third party software people *will* install and leave complacently around. I added a comment to the 'preparation' thread on tuned boot graphics and themes: where can one stop?

Another cause identified as DivX shell extension:
http://forums.divx.com/viewtopic.php?to ... 1&forum=24

Workaround:

Eliminate the context-menu handler from the registry, or disable it temporarily using ShellExView tool.

Eliminate the context-menu handler

Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT. Navigate to:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\EncodeDivXExt]

Backup the key to a REG file, and delete EncodeDivXExt key

Close Registry Editor and restart Windows

-or-

Disable the DivX context-menu handler using ShellExView tool

In ShellExView, the entry might read as EncodeDivXExt Module

How do I use DivX software on Windows XP SP2?

I also have the Win Explorer crashes on a right click and do not have DivX installed. Obviously another program is conflicting with DEP. The workaround of disabling DEP has worked for me just as it has for installs of DivX.
