The above steps are necessary because, at present, Symantec is only deliverying this update through a manual LiveUpdate. Reportedly they later will make it availabe for direct download or through other channels but, at present, this appears to be the reliable path to get it.
It also isn't clear to me which versions of Symantec products are having a patch provided - whether it is only the newest, or whether this is going back a few years. If someone knows, perhaps they could supplement this thread? Historically, Symantec's usual approach to resolving incompatibilities in a new Windows version has been to roll out the fix in the next new version of their products.
I've also gotten emails that, in isolated cases, the patch doesn't work and there are more serious problems. I don't have a clear path to a solution, as yet, that I can post - I suggest you post the questions in the relevant forum (e.g., Windows 5 or Antivirus/Security topics) and we will attempt to find solutions.
